No trip to Queenstown/Central Otago is complete without visiting one of our local wineries. Showcasing some of New Zealand’s best wines and home to famous wineries such as Mt Difficulty and Bannockburn, whether you are a wine connoisseur or merely an enthusiast it will be an afternoon well spent.
With over 200 vineyards scattered within a 90-minute drive, Queenstown is the gateway to the famous Central Otago wine region. We have put together a list of “Must Visit” Wineries for the ultimate winery experience.
The closest winery to Queenstown, a short 15minute drive away on the outskirts of Arrowtown, Amisfield sits at the edge overlooking Lake Hayes. Although the wine is world class, if you are a little less interested in the wine and more focussed on the food and setting, then the internationally acclaimed cuisine at Amisfield is a must!
Perfect for the budding wine connoisseur, Gibbston Valley AKA the ‘valley of the vines’ offers wine tasting at their cellar door and a fantastic cheesery. For a unique experience make sure you visit the Wine Cave and treat yourself to one of their delicious tasting platters matched with the perfect drop.
The award winning architecture is reason enough to visit this winery in itself. Designed to mimic a falcon in flight, Peregrine’s cellar fits perfectly into the rugged landscape of the Kawarau Gorge.
Located in Bannockburn, Mt Difficulty was one of the first established wineries. Known for their Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, be sure to stop for lunch (reservation likely required) and enjoy the award winning cuisine and views overlooking the vineyards and surrounding mountain ranges - Try a glass of the Roaring Meg, you won’t be disappointed!
