It’s a great time to stay in Queenstown during spring – there’s still some snow on the mountains but there’re also blossoms on the trees and lambs frolicking in the paddocks. Not to mention the longer, sunnier days for plenty of holiday action.
Queenstown has it all for family holiday fun – regardless of your age. It’s the perfect location to take kids.
We’ve compiled a list of the top five things to do in Queenstown during these school holidays.
1. Join a school holiday programme
Queenstown Lakes District Council Sport and Recreation runs great, affordable school holiday programmes for kids aged five to 12. The programmes are varied and offer a mix of outdoor, indoor, creative, sporty, culinary and fun activities for kids. Running from September 30 to October 11, they’re based at the Queenstown Events Centre and the Queenstown Memorial Centre.
2. Take a trip on the Earnslaw
The vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw is an important part of Queenstown’s history. You and the kids will love a tranquil, scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu over to Walter Peak Station, where you can visit the steam engine room while on your way to experience a high country farm tour. Cruises depart regularly throughout the day.

3. Ski or snowboard at The Remarkables
Enjoy the final week of snow at The Remarkables. The ski area closes for the season on October 6. It’s been a great winter with some good dumpings of natural snow, aided by snow-making. Spring skiing and riding is great for families – with warm, sunny days and soft, springy snow.
4. The Wizard of Oz on Ice
See about 80 local ice skaters, aged four to 65 perform the classic story of The Wizard of Oz at the Queenstown Ice Arena on October 4 and 5.
5. Visit the Queenstown Arts and Crafts Market
This market is a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Arts and crafts made from around the South Island are sold at Earnlaw Park, right beside Lake Wakatipu. Running every Saturday from 9am-4.30pm, you can soak up the relaxed vibe by listening to music played by locals and taking in the breath-taking scenery.
